Paul Rossi was born in Wales to a family with strong roots in northern Italy. It is this inheritance of culture and ideals which form the cornerstone of Paul’s work.

Drawing and painting in a variety of media, including oil, gouache and charcoal, Paul works in series, exploring genre in figurative, biblical, still life and abstract pieces.

His Figurative paintings are concerned with the evocation of an archetypal world, attempting to evoke a place, and concurrently, a dimension of consciousness, transcending the historical or anecdotal moment. They are therefore presented in an elemental form, in which a normal sense of time has been suspended. These works represent a world as a unified, integrated, interlocking reality; a cosmos.

The fundamental elements of nature: earth, sky, sea, human, animal and botanical presences, are subsumed within a unifying vision, where each element exists in calm, harmony with one another, and derives its characteristic energy or life from its relation to each of the other elements.

The Figurative and semi-abstract still-life paintings have their sources in synthetic cubism. These abstract and semi-abstract works attempt to explore the relation between figuration and minimalist abstraction, with stylistic sources in cubism and constructivism.

A futher series of figurative paintings in oil, and charcoal drawings are concerned with the exploration of Biblical themes and motifs.
